T-Mobile lost your data – sorry

T-Mobile is facing big trouble due to the fact that if you happened to own a Sidekick device, you may have lost all data on your phone.  Contacts, meetings, phones, notes you name it, it’s gone.

To help you with your loss, T-Mobile has stated that they will issue $100 credits for customers who were affected by this.

So what’s happening now?  It seems as though that token bit of assistance isn’t sitting well with some of their consumers and they are now starting to see lawsuits rolled in.  As consumers with these telecom companies, we fully expect that certain basic things would be done to protect us.  Guard our credit card numbers, don’t give out our email addresses and darn it, make sure you at least backup your database once in a while!

Whew!  However, you weren’t affected right?  Feel bad for those people who did have data loss?  Wow, that’s too bad.  Okay, how about you?  Is your data backed up on your phone or the people in your company?  How much data is exclusively on your phone and nowhere else?  That precious picture of your grandchildren?  That ever important client you met out at dinner last week?  What happens if the same thing were to happen to you?  How much time would your lose trying to recover that data loss?

A few suggestions:

1.  Pull out your manual.  Find that manual that probably still has the shrink-wrap still on it and take a look at what you can do.  Some phones might have your data on a SIM card, others store it on internal memory.  If there is a way to get that data off, do it!

2.  Text it.  Have a few pieces of info that are important?  Send that picture to your email or that important phone number.

3.  Memory cards.  In some cases, your smartphone stores certain data on a mini-SD or SD flash memory card.  Take it out every now and then and simply back it up to your computer.  That way, your important info is somewhere near you.

4.  There are a few online websites that offer backup solutions, as well as programs that can provide you with a way to take important data onto your phone.

Even though Microsoft has indicated that MOST of the data has been retrieved, it makes the most sense for you not to take chances and backup your devices, like Mama used to say – I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a million times…..
